Crystal Ballroom

On Saturday the 14th, I sat down with Portland-based band Spooky Boys just before their biggest show yet at the Crystal Ballroom, where they opened for Dayglow.

Speaking with the band, it was clear how much they enjoy making music together. Balancing writing, recording, rehearsing, and managing day jobs keeps their schedules packed, but they approach it with genuine enthusiasm. As we talked about their creative process and touring aspirations, their passion for what they do was present in the conversation; it’s not just work; it’s what they truly love.

Their sound has steadily built them a loyal following since their 2021 debut. Their self-titled EP in 2021 introduced reverb-heavy guitars and melodic rhythms. 2022's "Which Ways Up" helped sharpen their sound with tracks like "U-turn" and "British Columbia." In 2023, "Late Bloomers" reflected on our post-quarantine life through tracks like "Fading Tides." Their latest EP, "Mental Vacation," continues to push their sound forward.

Their set at the Crystal Ballroom demonstrated their ability to engage the audience and build energy for the rest of the night, earning them new fans by the end of their performance. If you haven’t listened to Spooky Boys yet, you absolutely should. Keep an eye on them in 2025, especially as they gear up for their first appearance at Treefort next March!
